You can definitely make use of your attic as a storage space in your home as long as you know how to utilize it properly. An attic is one least reachable area for your storage and more difficult to access than a garage or basement. Truth be told, an attic is one place that you can shelve in items that you only need during occasions. For instance, attic storage is the best option for keeping your Halloween costumes or holiday decorations.

However, the attic has been noticed more and more as a room capable of storing other items as well. You can lug in huge boxes filled to the brim with used or outgrown clothes, books, kids' toys, curios, and other whatnots. You can even keep appliances that need to be repaired on a later date. With the attic as a storage space, anything is possible as long as you know what sort of items you want stored and what needs to be classified as trash.

Before hauling in containers and arranging furniture, ensure that your attic is safe. Check for roof leaks, protruding nails, and weak or missing floorboards that can pose safety risks. Survey the flooring and ceiling for signs of decay, instability, and leakage. If your attic is quite dim, install adequate lighting as well. If you are in the process of carrying large and heavy items for storage in your attic, widening the door or opening of the attic and setting up fold-down stairs are good ideas to make your job easier and smoother.

Utilizing the attic as a storage space may not include total renovation but you can surely opt for a few refurbishing here and there. Move some shelves in place to organize items such as books, frames, dishes, glasses, and even your wine bottles. Shelves are pretty sturdy and you can even fit small containers and boxes in them. Label the shelves so that locating the goods and returning them will be easy enough.

Another way to increase the storage space in your attic is to get storage bins. These bins, in sizes small or large, are great for keeping in items such as clothes, shoes, bags, and papers. Also, you can get them in different colors for a color-coded sorting system. For instance, one bin can compose of toys, the other one clothes, and the next, your files, folders, and soft copies. Lucent containers are also ideal to enable you to view what is inside. For heavier storage bins, place them in easy to reach areas. Do not stack them in elevated platforms or atop furniture.

To increase attic storage, you may also opt for aisles. Creating attic aisles can make your attic neat and organized. With rows of shelves, closets, and columns of boxes and containers, you can retrieve your belongings easier. Aisles are advantageous as they divide individual item to each person it belongs to.

However, bear in mind that most attics are not that ventilated or insulated. Without proper ventilation and insulation, the room could collect moisture which does not bode well for your stored items. Add vents, skylights, windows, and weather proofing systems to get the ventilation that your attic and your valuables deserve.
